Medical Systems Engineering students in Boston!
Two of our Medical Systems Engineering students Ivan Fomin and David Schote got the chance to do research in magnetic resonance imaging in cooperation with the Athinoula A. Martino Center. This exchange was made possible by the existing cooperation between Harvard Medical School in Boston and Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg.
The two students and staff members of the research campus STIMULATE used the opportunity of the "Research Track" to expand their practical experience during their three-month stay abroad. In this process, two projects were realised in cooperation with Dr. Thomas Witzel.
In the project "Gradient Power Amplifier", Ivan Fomin focused on the development of a low-cost fully functional gradient amplifier for small format MRI systems, which is capable of supplying several gradient coils simultaneously and reliably. First image acquisitions could be generated in interaction with an existing tabletop MRI.
David Schote developed for his project "Open-Source Relaxometry" both the hardware and the software to run a relaxometer. Relaxometry can be used to determine the T1 and T2 relaxation times known from magnetic resonance imaging, which are responsible for the contrasts of different tissue types in the MRI image. Among other things, the system he developed enables more individualized and automated measurements compared to the existing reference system.
Thanks to the two successful projects, the transfer of knowledge between OVGU, the STIMULATE research campus and the renowned research institutions in Boston will continue and expand in the future.
