Information for prospective students

Contents of the study programme

Based on the prior knowledge of engineering and natural sciences obtained during the bachelor, the master programme offers in depth studies of medical systems engineering, in particular medical technology, medical informatics and medical physics. Among others, the students can specialize and gain broad knowledge in the following fields: medical imaging, neuroscience, medical interventions and deep learning. Please check the module descriptions for more detailed information.

Due to the close contact to the Magdeburg University Hospital, the students have the extraordinary chance to take part in surgeries and see the daily clinical work, recognize existing problems and develop solutions which support or help the physician and/or patients.

For applicants who have earned their bachelor’s degree in India, Bangladesh, or Pakistan, proof of academic proficiency in the form of a “Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test” or a “Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)” with the specified minimum score or higher is mandatory in addition to the required admission criteria.

Graduates of an Indian Institute of Technology or the Indian Institute of Science (IISc Bengaluru) do not need to provide proof of the GATE to apply. In this case, the transcript from the Indian Institute of Technology or the Indian Institute of Science must be submitted in place of the GATE/GRE document.

GRE/GATE Test Specifications

*) The GATE is considered proven if it is currently valid (valid for 2 years) and the reported Marks out of 100 is higher than the reported General Score of the Qualifying Marks.

Course structure:

The modularly structured course is divided into compulsory and selectable deepening modules. The compulsory modules, which take place mostly in the first semester, provide the basics in the different areas of medical technology. In the further semesters, the students then have the opportunity to choose from the various deepenings and to specialize in the corresponding fields.

You can choose from the following deepenings:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Radiation and Medical Physics
  • Magnetic Resonance Theory and Engineering
  • Mechanical- and Flow-Simulation in Medical Engineering
  • Medical Visualization and Interventions
  • AI in Image and Signal Processing
  • Physiological and Biological Systems and Modelling
  • Microsystems Engineering
  • Advanced Medical Electronics

There is also the opportunity for research-oriented students to follow the so-called 'Research Track'. Here, a research project for 15 credit points can already be performed from the second semester onwards. This can be done in the context of projects at universities, research institutions or in companies.
For such practical experience, the OVGU offers students a large cooperation network in the field of medical technology.
